Marie Kondo, the Japanese organising consultant and author that inspired many people around the world to organise and declutter their homes, has herself gave-up on tidying.

Kondo became famous for her KonMari Method, basically only keep items that “spark joy” and let go of everything else. She has written several books on the subject and her philosophy has been popularised through her Netflix show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”, which launched in 2019. Meanwhile, “the Queen of Clean” became mother for the third time, and her priorities shifted. “My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life,” she told the Washington Post.

Having three kids has led to more messiness and a change of perspective: “up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times. I have kind of given up on that in a good way for me. Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home,” the 38-years-old mum added. She concluded by saying “I will keep looking inward to make sure I am leading my own kurashi (way of life).”

Kondo, also a mom to daughters Satsuki, 7, and Miko, 6 said in the past she encourages her kids to help tidying-up the house. “I try to teach them how to fold clothes. Children are very close observers so I try to make it so they can watch me folding clothes. From time to time I do feel anxious. It’s not 100 percent. It’s not perfect.” She also published a children’s book in 2019, “Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship” that brings her unique tidying method to young readers in a charming picture book.
